The Other Art Fair Picks

The Other Art Fair landed back in London in new digs at the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane this week, filled to the rafters with 140 artists and installations, including some thought provoking pieces designed to help pave the way for a greener future.

A great variety of techniques, ideas and approaches is showcased through TOAF, including pour paintings from Sarah Emily Porter which are inspired by sudoku, and Tom Van Herrewege’s Hit List – a collection of vintage cigarette cards and bank notes which feature animals that are carefully burned away in direct proportion to their place on the endangered list. Liam Hayhow showed some of his wall mounted brass rod sculptures, which play with light and shadow to give you a different perspective depending on where you stand.

Four ArtCan artists were on the roster for this edition – Michelle Hold showcased a series of big, cheerful abstract canvases, Lauren Mele brought bright and expressive life studies, Anna-Louise Felstead showed colourful painted urban landscapes and Nina Archer filled her stand with captivating abstract monoliths in gesso and graphite.

Victoria Young Jamieson has a delightful selection of inky mixed media pieces to choose from, and Richard Heys always brings a bold selection of abstracts – this time including some lovely miniatures too.

TOAF always tries to give you a little something extra, which this time was delivered particularly via The Purr Room, brought to you by Gary Baseman, which you could feel vibrating before you were anyway near, as well as Full Circle by Becky McCray. There was also a special exhibit in partnership with charity Missing People called #Unmissable – find out more and support the charity here.

Overall, you can find a fun and quirky selection of art and activities at TOAF. If you missed it this time around, you can catch their other editions around the globe throughout the year, including at the Brooklyn Expo Centre (2nd – 5th May) where you can also catch ArtCan artist Caroline Banks >>
